The goal of the library is to provide an open and welcoming environment where students are encouraged to read and enjoy books. At the School of Saint Mary, the library works in conjunction with the computer center to offer students a wide range of media resources. The librarian, the computer specialist and the teachers frequently plan multi media learning experiences together to enhance the classroom curriculum.
Students in grades K-2 have a scheduled library time once a week. There is a featured book and activity at each session and the students are introduced to the workings of a library. Students are allowed to choose their own books to check out and read at home. Students in grades 3 and 4 have a standard time to check out books and have lessons planned in the use of the library and the Dewey Decimal System. Students in grades 5 and 6 are scheduled to check out books weekly and seventh and eighth graders are encouraged to check out books when needed. In order to further promote a love of reading, students may participate in the Accelerated Reader Program, where they earn points for scoring well on tests covering books they have read.
